Women and girls are always disproportionately affected in times of war and conflict. I’m thinking of my Afghan sisters who have been and will continue to bear the brunt of the ongoing power struggles in Afghanistan. I’m thinking of all the women and girls who will no longer be able to access education, employment, healthcare, and basic freedom of movement. My heart aches for all the women and girls who will be fleeing or resisting at great risk and danger to themselves.
It breaks my heart when I think of all the women and girls who will be subject to living under a deeply patriarchal and misogynistic regime, and who will be stripped of basic freedoms and rights that every human deserves.
The US used the false pretense of promoting women’s rights to legitimize its presence in Afghanistan, only the leave women in a condition far more vulnerable and insecure two decades later. Between the American imperialist agenda and Taliban fundamentalism, women have suffered the most and it is deeply unfair.
There have been fundraising efforts as well as in-kind donations that we should all be amplifying right now.
